The Rippling Effect of Bitterness

Life’s challenges change you, and there becomes a great contrast between who you were and who you have become. When you face circumstances out of control, you search for channels to exert your frustrations and seek vengeance. It’s like a snowball effect; you find yourself tumbling down a mountain, descending toward insanity, becoming a bigger threat to those along the way.

Vengeance is a toxic substance that instigates a vicious cycle of conflicts. You see, unkindness is contagious. If you treat someone wrongly, odds are, it will become a source of their unkindness toward others. And just like that, it would create a vicious cycle of hate that has no end. Conflict will escalate, and feuds will develop. Conflict will come with collateral damage and those close to you will be in danger because of your wrath.

Due to bitterness in your heart, you may find yourself losing your sense of self. Where, once, the minor things in life brought you joy, you begin to see the world differently. You are caught in a complex polarity, where your conquest for revenge does more damage to your own self than the one you wish to harm.

The thoughts of negativity become all-consuming. And as a result, there is no room left to focus on self-improvement. You begin to approach life with a “nothing to lose” mindset. But the question remains: Will revenge bring you satisfaction?

The fact that you are pushed to the point where you have no choice but to seek vengeance is a testimony of the turmoil you have been through. But the key is prioritizing compassion, moving on in life, and working toward improving yourself. We need to flip the perspective and look at life from a different POV that exudes kindness.

Of course, it is easier said than done.

The protagonist of Jedediah Ravine’s Western classic, Wichita U.S. Marshall, faces a similar predicament. We bear witness to the plight of Wichita, a man who embarks on a conquest filled with rage and vengeance due to the death of his wife and son. As he traverses through the Wild West to bring the outlaws responsible to justice, how will his quest affect those he meets along the trail?

Only one way to find out.
